The quintessential industrial suburb - Gary, Indiana. As our readings stated, Gary came about because industry left the central city of Chicago for more far-flung environs to avoid unionized labor, taxes, etc. While its heyday is behind it, Gary still persists. One gets a glimpse of the wild land Gary was originally situated upon, especially in the last picture. It is a striking contrast to the super-industrial (and smelly) Gary and its metro neighbor Chicago (final picture).

Fascinating. Were you recently in Gary??? I'd love to see some of the neighborhoods, too--the variety of housing in contrast to that in Pullman, IL.
ReplyDeleteI was up at Notre Dame in October and had to drive through Gary to/from O'Hare
