Suburban Sprawl - Lawrenceville

According to this week's reading a characteristic of suburban sprawl is a situation that arises when a town decides to build new shopping centers around its original city instead of repairing or remoldeling the original city. Historic downtown Lawrenceville is a similar example. Seen in the first two pictures are examples of sprawl "gone bad." What Lawrenceville has done is over build shopping centers around the city and most of these centers are full of empty buildings.

The next three pictures I've posted are examples of the original downtown Lawrenceville. However, in this weeks reading a sprawl typically neglects the downtown area in favor of building outward. Historic Lawrenceville has made a great effort to keep their original area "modern." As seen here businesses have taken the original buildings and remodeled them. This keeps the historic area fresh and vibrant.

My last picture is merely an example of a gated community. My apartment complex is gated and you must have a key card to enter. However, the gate is usually broken so the whole concept is ridiculously stupid.

  1. Interesting photos, Kenny--shame they are not more clear (low light?). Broken gates certainly help us think through the meaning and purpose of gates.
